Psychology Lost at Sea Activity
This activity was done in my college Psychology class and it was to demonstrate that you were able to get over what is called functional fixedness. Functional fixedness is when you are only able to see a object for what it was designed for and not for any other purpose. The scenario is that you and 4 other people got shipwrecked on an island and you were able to grab 15 items from the wreck. You had to rank the 15 items that was least important to most important. You then compared your rankings with the coast guard's rankings and you got a score from it. My group got an 18 which is in the best bracket and was the best in this class. I was very proud and surprised because I was not expecting to do that well. I feel like that this activity demonstrates thinking and problem solving well because you have to think about what each item is useful for and overcome the problem of functional fixedness.
